Via our sourcing partner, The Collaborative Coffee Source:
Mutira Farmers Cooperative Society is found in Kirinyaga county on the expansive slopes of Mount Kenya. The Cooperative Society was formed in
1951, with most of the factories in the Society being built in the 1960s. Secretary Manager Mr Boniface Muchiri oversees the day to day operations. Member factories are Mutitu, Kagumo, Ngorano, Mugaya, Karii, Kiangundu and Kiamutira. The cooperative head quarters and offices sit at the Kagumo factory.
The farmer members of the Society are trained in Good Agricultural Practices, and have undergone certifications with Utz, 4C, Rainforest Alliance and FairTrade. The factory is receiving assistance from our field partner Coffee Management Services (CMS). CMS’s long term goals with the Mutira Cooperative are increasing coffee production through farmer training, making easily ready access to inputs, Good Agricultural Practice seminars, and providing the most current printed materials on sustainable farming.
The Collaborative Coffee Source came across this lot while cupping at CMS in November of 2015. Early harvest trips are typically dedicated to visiting producers and washing stations, not cupping and buying. This outturn, however, was incredibly impressive for an early harvest coffee and we were very excited to bring it in. CCS Purchased the AA and PB screen sizes from this outturn.
