buena esperanza alfaro
Buena Esperanza describes the highest point of the property at Hacienda Santa Rosa which is one of the two original coffee mills in Huehuetenango. Hacienda Santa Rosa is run by Gustavo Alfaro who is a fourth generation owner running the farm and mill. Most of the people that work there are from the neighboring town of Santa Barbara, one of the poorest towns in the region. Gustavo believes that the future of the farm lies in the happiness of the workers, so since taking the lead at the farm he has made it a priority to provide food to his workers regardless of market price and land for planting crops. The mill is at about 900m while Buena Esperanza is about 1800m. Buena Esperanza produced 50bags, next year when the plants are fully mature they will produce about double that yield. We spent two days with Gustavo last February at Hacienda Santa Rosa after first meeting him and cupping his coffee at Ana Cafe in Huehuetenango. The first cupping went very well, Silas described it as having lots of fruit. The varietal harvested from Buena Esperanza is called Mundo Nuevo (also Mundo Novo in Brazil) and it is a cross between bourbon and typica. It is similar to typica in shape except it has longer beans with pointed tips. Because it is rarely grown outside of Brazil we do not know too much about it, however this coffee scored very well and we are curious to see what it can offer.
